Museum Exhibition Location
The Irish Famine Exhibition is located on the 2nd Floor of the Stephens Green Shopping Centre.
This is situated across the road from the main entrance to Stephens Green Park.
It's a 5 minute walk from Trinity College, at the top of Grafton Street.
As you walk into the shopping centre, there is an elevator about 25 yards inside on the right. Go to the 2nd Floor, then go left.
From the car park, we are at the opposite end of the centre.
Famine Museum Artefacts
As news of the first potato crop failure broke in 1845, Newspapers from around the world were soon reporting on it. Ireland's dependence on the potato was unique - as many as 3 million people relied upon it one way or another for their survival.
We include original articles from a British Newspaper called The Globe, which ran from 1803 to 1921, and the Worcester Palladium from Worcester Massachusetts which ran from 1840 to 1876.
We also an 1876 letter from a Father to his Son.

We have recently published a new book based on the content of our exhibition storyboards. This will make a great gift for someone who cannot visit the exhibition. For those interested in the story of the Irish Potato Famine / Great Hunger, it will also act as a great reference book.

Sultan of Turkey Letter
Thanks to the assistance of the Turkish Embassy in Dublin, a high resolution copy of a Letter stored in the National Archives of Istanbul will also be on display.
The letter was sent from Dublin to the Sultan in response to his donation to Irish Famine Relief in 1847.
It contains the names of many significant members of the gentry and churches in Ireland at that time.

Famine Pot
The famine pot which was used to make soup, is perhaps the ultimate famine memorial and was sometimes referred to as a soup boiler or workhouse pot.
The pots were mainly manufactured in Coalbrookdale in Shropshire, England by the Quaker iron foundry run by the Darby family. They were made of cast iron.
600 pots were supplied by the Government, a further 295 were provided by the Quakers themselves and number of them also came from the United States.
In the summer months of 1847, approximately 3 million Irish People relied on soup from these pots for their survival.
An original cast-iron Great Irish famine pot from Donegal will be included in our exhibition alongside a number of other museum pieces.
The Famine in Mayo
County Mayo was one of the counties that suffered most during The Great Hunger in Ireland. In the West of Ireland as a whole, the population declined by as much as a fifth.
December 1847
The English Quaker philanthropist, James Hack Tuke, witnesses the eviction of six or seven hundred people in Erris, Co Mayo. He finds large families living in "human burrows"; they are "quiet harmless persons, terrified of strangers".
The barony's population last year was estimated at 28,000. 2,000 have emigrated and 6,000 died of starvation, dysentery and fever. Of the 20,000 left, 10,000 are on the verge of starvation. "10,000 people within 48 hours' journey of the metropolis of the world, living, or rather starving, upon turnip-tops, sand-eels and seaweed, a diet which no one in England would consider fit for the meanest animal."

The Famine Memorial:
The memorial, which stands on Customs House Quay was created by Rowan Gillespie and presented to the city of Dublin in 1997. The sculpture features six lifesize figures dressed in rags, clutching onto their belongings and children. In 2007, similar figures where unveiled in Toronto, Canada's Ireland Park.

The Jeanie Johnston:
Jeanie Johnston is a replica of a three masted barque that was originally built in Quebec, Canada, in 1847 (during Irelands Great Famine) by the Scottish-born shipbuilder John Munn.

What was the Great Irish Famine?
The Great Irish Famine, also known as the Irish Potato Famine or the Great Hunger, was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. Causes and contributing factors of the Great Irish Famine?
The Great Famine in Ireland had multiple causes and contributing factors:
1. Dependence on Potatoes: The Irish population relied heavily on potatoes as a staple food crop. The high-yield and nutritional value of potatoes made them a primary source of sustenance for many poor rural Irish families.
2. Monoculture: The overreliance on a single crop, particularly the Lumper potato variety, led to vulnerability to diseases such as late blight (Phytophthora infestans). When the blight struck in 1845, it quickly spread throughout Ireland, devastating the potato harvest for several years in a row.
3. Landownership and Agricultural Practices: The majority of Irish peasants were tenant farmers who rented small plots of land from absentee British landlords. These landlords often focused on maximizing profits through cash crops like grain or raising livestock, rather than supporting diversified agriculture. This system left many Irish farmers with tiny plots of land that were not economically viable for growing anything other than potatoes.
4. British Policies: British economic and trade policies exacerbated the famine's impact. The exportation of food continued during the famine years, as Irish grain and livestock were exported to Britain even as the Irish population suffered from starvation and disease. How did the British colonise Ireland?
The colonization of Ireland by the British took place over several centuries and was a complex process involving military conquest, political alliances, economic control, and cultural assimilation. Here's an overview of key events and methods:
- Norman Invasion (12th Century): The initial wave of colonization occurred with the Norman invasion of Ireland in the late 12th century. Led by the Anglo-Norman knight Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, and sanctioned by the English monarchy, this invasion established English control over parts of Ireland, particularly in the eastern and southern regions. The Normans introduced feudalism and established a system of land ownership that laid the groundwork for centuries of English influence.
- English Crown Authority (Late Middle Ages): Over the following centuries, the English Crown sought to assert its authority over Ireland through a combination of military campaigns, diplomatic alliances, and colonization efforts. English monarchs granted lands to loyal nobles and settlers, displacing indigenous Irish landholders and establishing English control over key territories.

These involved confiscating land from Irish landowners, particularly in areas perceived as rebellious or disloyal, and redistributing it to English and Scottish settlers. - Religious Conflicts and Penal Laws: The religious conflicts of the Reformation era further fueled tensions between the native Catholic Irish population and the Protestant English authorities. Landlords and Tenants
Before Irelands Great Famine of the mid-19th century, the land system in Ireland was characterized by a combination of factors that had evolved over centuries, including feudalism, landlordism, and tenant farming. Here's an overview of the key features:
